Balgay Park

Balgay Park

Balgay Park has a fine mixture of deciduous and large conifer trees. For a relaxing afternoon, walk along the network of footpaths offering magnificent views across the River Tay. Balgay Hill is the home of the city's Mills Observatory.

Victoria Park offers a mixture of rose gardens, bedding plant displays, active play and recreational areas.

Lochee Park, donated to the city by the Cox Brothers (jute mill owners) in 1890, provides ample space for active sports.

Balgay Bridge - this elegant cast-iron arch footbridge, with a main span of 7,712 ft clear and an ornamentally bracketed horizontal span on each side of 1,612 ft, was erected in or soon after 1872 by Dundee Town Council. It crosses a valley separating the Western Necropolis cemetery from Balgay Park, the opening of which in 1871 is recorded on the bridge plaque. Each main arch ‘I’ beam is cast in three parts, bolted at their ends, and has a rise of 1,034 ft. The footway, originally timber, has a clear width of 8 ft and is about 42 ft above the pathway below.
